چکیده

In some microorganisms C02 can be replaced successfully as a growth factor by certain dicarboxylic acids which enter the Krebs cycle (Lwoff and Monod, 1946; Ajl and Werkman, 1948). Other microorganisms require C02 for growth even when cultivated on rather complex media (Steinman, et al., 1954; Mueller and Einton, 1941), and the biochemical basis for this need has remained obscure. In the course of investigations on the glutathione requirement of certain mutants of Neisseria gonorrhoeae, it was observed that this microorganism grew well in the absence of C02 provided a small amount of yeast extract was included in the medium. A survey of a number of different strains of N. gonorrhoeae obtained from various laboratories and from clinical cases revealed that the phenomenon was a general one and not restricted to the glutathione-less mutant. It was reported in a preliminary note (Griffin and Racker, 1955) that the yeast extract can be replaced by a combination of three factors: hypoxanthine, uracil, and oxaloacetate. It is the purpose of this paper to present the details of this investigation.

Carbon dioxide requirement of Neisseria gonorrhoeae growing on a solid medium.

A survey of 120 isolations of Neisseria gonorrhoeae from male patients showed that 47 (39%) isolates were unable to produce visible colonies without a supply of exogenous carbon dioxide. Of 63 strains, 25 strains required CO2 for isolation but none exhibited a CO2 requirement beyond subculture 4. CO2-requiring strains deprived of CO2 appeared to lose their colony-forming ability exponentially i...

Growth Requirements of N. Gonorrhoeae †

Routine methods for the isolation of Neisseria gonorrhoeae employ various complex media in conjunction with devices designed to supply an atmosphere of approximately 10 per cent carbon dioxide. Recent investigations7 of the CO2 requirement of N. gonorrhoeae have shown that various strains of this microorganism can be grown on a Casamino-salts-glucose agar medium in the absence of CO2, provided ...

Ammonium bicarbonate as a replacement for carbon dioxide in Transgrow bottles for primary isolation of Neisseria gonorrhoeae.

Transgrow bottles with medium containing ammonium bicarbonate and Transgrow bottles gassed with 10% carbon dioxide performed equally well in detecting Neisseria gonorrhoeae in 434 clinical specimens. It appears that incorporation of ammonium bicarbonate into the medium increased the efficiency of the manufacturing process while maintaining the effectiveness of the medium.

A study on the frequency of vaginal species of Mycoplasma genitalium, Gardnerella vaginalis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae among pregnant women by PCR technique

Bacterial vaginosis or non-specific vaginitis describes the disease caused by a change in the normal Flora of the vagina, which leads to the elimination of Lactobacilli, generating hydrogen peroxide and excess growth of bacteria, particularly anaerobic bacteria. This disease is the most prevalent infection of the female genital tract, and the rate of frequency of anaerobic bacteria, specificall...

Cultivation of type 1 N. Gonorrhoeae in liquid media.

The effect of CO2 concentration on the growth and colonial stability of Type 1 Neisseria gonorrhoeae has been investigated. Carbon dioxide at a concentration of 16 per cent in air above flasks incubated in a shaker was effective in supporting growth and 100 per cent colonial stability of Types 1, 1', 2, and 4. Lower CO2 tensions increased the generation time of the strains and were less effecti...
